Troop Lock-in

What a great night the Troop had at the Lock-In for game night on December 13, 2019. The Scouts turned the troop meeting room into a mega video game room. We played games till about 1:30 AM. We had pizza and pop for dinner and then at 11:00 PM we had cookies and pop. All in all the Troop had a great time. We would like to thank our SPL and the PLC for doing such a great job in organizing this overnight. See Photos.

2019 Santa-Cali-Gon

What a Weekend at Santa-Cal-Gon Parking

The weekend started on Thursday night August 29, 2019 setting up of the Troop’s Parking Lots including putting up the signage and marking off the Mustard Seed lot, etc. What made it nice is there was a lot of help and everyone worked together to get the job done.

The weekend really started on Friday morning, August 30th when we started parking cars at 11:30 AM and continued until 4:00 PM on Monday, September 2nd. Even though we ended each evening around 10:30 PM, it felt like we parked cars non-stop throughout the four day weekend.

Those who worked these four days had a great time but a tiring time. We enhanced our comradery through teamwork and socializing with each other. By the end of the weekend, many felt just like this photo.

The Scout Troop would like to thank everyone who gave up a part of your holiday weekend to help your Scout Troop with this fundraiser. It would not be possible without you.  A big shout out goes to those leaders, scouts and parents that gave up their entire weekend to help with the fundraiser.

August 2019 Overnight

What a great weekend for our Troop Overnight. We worked on our troops patrol equipment and dutch oven cooking.

We started our overnight by everyone meeting and raising the America flag. Once this was done we had a few announcements by our Asst. Sr. Patrol Leader Quincy and then it was off to setting up our campsites and inventorying our patrol equipment. Once this was done each patrol was challenged to bake a cake in a dutch oven.

After we were finished with the cake baking it was time to cook our dinner and oh what great dinners we prepared. One of the patrols cooked pork chops, potatoes and vegetables. Another patrol cook lasagna and our other patrols prepared pizza casserole. Everything looked great and tasted great.

It was great working as a patrol to prepare and cook our meals.

After dinner the troop had a campfire where each of our patrols had a skit and song with our MC being our Senior Patrol Leader Clayton. It was a great time for troop fellowship. At the end of the campfire we found out which patrol got 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th Place in the Cake Baking contest. When camp fire was over we had a little free time before it was time to go to bed.

We were woke up by our Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster asking us to get up roll up your stuff and let’s get our tents down to try and beat the rain storm. Everyone did a great job and yes we beat the rain storm.

Once we got our tents down we were once again challenge to prepare our breakfast. One patrol cooked scramble eggs and ham. The other patrols cooked Denver omelet with all the fixings and Mountain Man breakfast with bacon, onions, hash browns and eggs. Breakfast turned out great!!!!!

Once breakfast clean-up was done. The scouts put together a church service to follow the twelfth part of the Scout Law a scout is reverent.

We then took down the remaining equipment, retired the colors and picked up trash in the area to allow the troop to leave the area better than we found it. Then everyone went one.

Can’t wait for our next overnight.

Scout Camp

Arrival at Camp this year was a little different than the other times. I headed out on the Troop bus until we arrived at Ico, then took a drive to Pawnee, Lonestar campsite with Scott to help set up and unpack for some of the younger first year Scouts. Camp boxes and bedding were organized into neat piles so that the new scouts could grab their things and pick a tent.
The next step of first day is to take a hike to the Pool so that we could all take our swimming test, and I have to say it felt pretty good because this year was a heat wave! Each scout is tested too find out the color of band they receive, your color will determine the level you can swim. The day wrapped up with going to the Opening Night Campfire Ceremony, and the 2019 Summer is officially underway!

Scout camp was a blast when everyone was down there. Everyone had a smile on their faces and most were happy. All of the younger scouts were excited for day four to watch their first call night and so were the new braves who were nervous to hear there names called. To become a new brave in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. Our two braves were Clayton and Ryan we had a guest to troop 282 and he also got his brave with us. We had one new Warrior which was Quincy. Everyone had fun at camp and on sunday everyone was happy to see their loved ones. On the last day everyone was happy that they could go home and sleep in their own beds.

Camp 2019 3rd year at camp

For my third year, I mainly liked doing the merit badges. Which were life saving, archery, and rifle shooting. We did the paddling out post and I liked it. That is why I plan to do a look of stuff at lake front next year. I was also able to finish my Star rank before camp was over. I really look forward to camp 2020.

The Cosmosphere

The Overnight in April was a journey into Space, all the way to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas. So we loaded up the Troop bus an headed on our journey to the Cosmosphere. Upon arriving we see a Rocket ship and we know that we have landed. When entering I notice a big black plane. It is called the Black Bird as it was used to spy on other countries to see what they were doing in regards to the space program, rockets or weaponry. As this jet plane flew at 80,000 feet. There is a lot of original Space artifacts in their museum as we learned from the tour, even an Apollo Space mission capsule. We also learned about the history and properties of rocket fuel at Dr. Goddards Lab. And we watched a movie about the Space program in the Digital Theater. In doing all of this the Scouts earned Engineering and Robotics Merit Badges.
But the highlight was when the scouts divided up into teams to build their robotic vehicle for the robotic battle. They fought in a double elimination tournament to see who made the best robotic vehicle. And the winning team won an autographed picture of the Astronaut that walked on the moon 3 times. That winning team included James Buehler, DJ Lee, and Drake Ogle. I also want to mention their were undefeated, that’s right they never lost. A big How How to them. But a Big HOW HOW to all the Scouts who went and lived up to the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

The Cosmosphere

The scouts just returned from a trip to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS and I’m going to tell you all about it.
Once we arrived at the Cosmosphere, the scouts were told what we would get to do while we were there, and then we began the tour of the museum.
We got to see lots of things that they took into space for everyday use, as well as their space suits.
We also got to see a space rock, but unfortunately we couldn’t touch it. After the tour, we started working on the Robotics badge. We got to add parts to robot machines, and have battle rounds like “Battle Bots”. This was a lot of fun!
That evening, we got to sleep under an actual spaceship, which was really cool!
The next morning after breakfast, we finished battle rounds, worked on our Engineering badge and saw an IMAX movie, before we headed home.
This was definitely one of my favorite overnights.

6 Months to Camp

I personally like the experiences at camp. For example: seeing the Mic-O-Say Dancers and She-She-Be point with its wonderful view of Truman lake. There are different merit badges to be earned, daily swimming, and in my opinion, camping outside is the best. I remember my first year doing the mile swim, and getting to learn leather working and wood carving. It is all so much fun and I just can’t wait until we all go back to camp this summer!

Snow Overnight Jan 12-13,2019

What a great overnight. The Scouts and Leaders that showed up will be earning a white coup for snow on an overnight. This coup has not been given out in a few years. Did we have snow? Yes, before we went home Sunday, eleven inches of snow had fallen from Friday through Sunday morning. Four Webelos II attended the overnight.  Although this was a tough ‘first’ overnight, they all did a great job. It was a great experience which included a five mile urban hike. The scouts and leader made foil dinners (2-hamburger patties, sliced potatoes, carrots, green beans, corn, onion, tomato sauce and different spices) for their Saturday evening meal. After dinner we had several cups of hot chocolate and we played several rounds of hang man. Then it was off to our plastic shelter to go to bed. The shelter was built by the scouts and led by Mr. Humphrey, our newest adult leader.

On Sunday morning we got up and began our day with a cup of hot chocolate. Then it was off to cook bacon and eggs in a paper bag, boil a hardboiled egg in a paper cup and cook link sausage in foil. Overall we cooked 36 eggs, 2 pounds of bacon, 40 sausage links and 30 biscuits on sticks. It was a great breakfast.

What made this overnight great? The Scouts, Leaders and of course the snow. It is not every overnight you get to sleep out in the snow.

70th Anniversary of Troop 282

On Saturday, 3/11/18, troop 282 celebrated it’s 70th anniversary and numerous former scouts showed up to help Celebrate.. It started off with slide presentation showing the evolution of troop 282 over its life span. Special emphasis on the contributions made by the Scoutmasters and other leaders. A former Reservation director gave us the history of Camp Osceola and J.D. Hammontree along with several humorous stories. Then, they served cake and punch for us to have it was good. It was a good time had by all.
