Scout Day at the K

This past Scout Day at the K will be the most memorable for me. It was a great game for the Royals, there was good weather, and I got to experience a little extra in the outfield since I am now an Eagle Scout. Walking around in the outfield and seeing the hall of fame, and getting to see four Eagle Scouts recognized for their achievements made me realize that I have much more that I can go on to do in life. I also got to see two of my good friends from camp staff pitch the honorary first pitch, and catch it. It was pretty cool to see. And as always, Scout Day at the K is made better with a Royals win. This year was a good year for the scouts, and I can’t wait to go next year.

Troop Overnight April 1, 2 and 3, 2016

What a great overnight the troop had on April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd however you would not know it
was April on Friday night as the temp. dropped to below freezing and yes many got cold. I
guess you would say we were not prepared as the founder of scouting, good ole’ Baden Powell,
would have wanted us to be. Saturday was a great day, warm and sunny. Our patrols cooked
breakfast, lunch and dinner with many new menu items. After lunch, the troop had some patrol
competition with burn the string and a cake baking contest. Both of these events were great. As
you can see from the pictures, we have very good cake bakers. On Saturday evening, all the
patrols cooked great meals including hamburger stew, pulled pork sandwiches and pizza. Then
Saturday evening, the troop had a very good campfire with some new songs, new skits and
some great mind games by Mr. Copeland and Mr. Wyatt. On Sunday, the patrols and leaders
once again had some great breakfasts. The leaders had so much that we shared ours with the
entire troop, way to go Mr. Wyatt. The scouts worked great together cleaning up and breaking
down camp. We would like to thank Mr. Leabo and Justin Lee for the Troop church service.
The troop would like to thank all the scouts and leaders that came out on the overnight. Last but
not least the troop would like to thank Mr. Blann for pulling out the trailer and we would like to
thank Mr. Gramlich for driving the bus.

My Time as Senior Patrol Leader

I served this scout troop as Senior Patrol Leader from 2015-2016. I learned the ropes from Dillon England, since I was his assistant when he was Senior Patrol Leader. He set the stage for me and introduced me to what it was like really being a leader. After all, the Senior Patrol Leader has to lead all of the boys in the scout troop, with the help of the leaders, and the Scoutmaster, of course. So with the help of Dillon, the leaders, and the Scoutmaster, I feel that my time as Senior Patrol Leader made a positive impact on the troop. I feel that I presented this troop with new experiences and new opportunities, and hopefully, new memories that will be looked back upon with happiness. But I couldn’t have done it without all of the help that was given to me.

Timothy Phillips is the first scout to be awarded the Bobby Morris Scholarship by Troop 282. This

an Eagle Scout and is preparing to enroll in a college or university full-time. The recipient must

participate in weekly troop meeting, monthly troop activities and be showing leadership with an overall

participation of 61% or greater. The recipient must also attend summer camp with the scout troop the

prior summer.

Tim is a young adult who has lived up to the above requirements and is very deserving of the Bobby

Morris Scholarship. Tim started his scouting career as a Cub Scout graduating with the highest award in

Cub Scouting, the Arrow of Light and then earning the highest rank in Boy Scouting, the Eagle Rank and

then earning three Eagle Palms – Bronze, Gold and Silver. Tim attended scout camp every year with the

troop and he also took part in a troop High Adventure Trip to Ely, Minnesota, going canoeing on the

boundary waters for 5 days.

Tim is attending the University of Missouri Kansas City.

The Bobby Morris Scholarship was developed to honor the second Scoutmaster of Troop 282 as Mr.

Morris believed that every scout needed to do his best to obtain a formal education after high school.

If other Eagle Scouts in Troop 282 meet the above requirements and are interested in submitting an

application for the Bobby Morris Scholarship please see Gary Leabo.

Fairmount Food Pantry Giving Back

The boys in Troop 282 helped the Fairmount Food pantry with their annual food drive, which provided close to 200 families with a nice dinner over the holidays. There was many boys from troop 282 but also many younger boys from the Cub Scout troop that they mentor. We packed around 200 boxes in just 30 to 45 minutes. I believe the food drive was a success due to all the help that the scout gave.
After the Boy Scouts and Cubs finished packing the boxes, they headed over to Trinity episcopal church to have their lock-in where all the boys stayed and played games all night. Few of the boys stayed up to 5 o’clock in the morning but most fell asleep by 2. All the boys had fun and got to experience giving back to the community and having fun afterwards.

Troop Food Drive

I feel that we did a good deed helping people that need help around the holidays and it made me feel good to help people that needed it the most and to know that I madesomeone’s day bye giving them something to eat for the holidays I enjoyed giving back to someone in need. I thank we did a good job by giving back because that is what a good scout is to do.

Bartle Scout Camp 2016…………….Just Around the Corner

Troop 282 will be camping at Camp Lone Star 5th session July 17-26 in 2016. That being said, time will tick by very quickly. Follow the Scout Motto “Be Prepared”, and be sure to contribute weekly or at least regularly to your scout camp fund. Your popcorn sales do go toward your camp fund, and so will pancake ticket sales. $2 from each ticket sale goes to your camp fund. Starting in January, look for the beginning of many reminders about scout camp including your annual physical, merit badge sign up, and much more. Join me as we countdown to Boy Scout Camp at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation.

Best in Scouting,
Mark Mangels, Camp Scoutmaster 2016

IBEX Overnight

IBEX’s was one of my best experiences. The climbing wall was 32 feet high and was very fun. The bouldering wall was only 13 feet tall and you didn’t need to have a person to belay you. This activity has been my favorite memory in Boy Scouts yet.

Climbing Wall Overnight IBEX’s – Nov. 13th and 14th

The IBEX”s overnight was a great experience. It was an overnight with the treat of having something for everyone from standing around on comfortable mats to serious climbing for those who wanted it. It was also a rare treat to have an overnight that opened the possibility of merit badge advancement. Generous leadership providing a late night pizza and pop recharge for everyone. It was an overnight that had nothing but great activities and great company.

Climbing Wall Overnight – Nov. 13th and 14th

I really enjoyed my time spent at IBEX’s. It was my first time there and my first time at climbing. There’s something satisfying about becoming a certified climber and then climbing all night until you are exhausted. Would I do it again, of course, without a doubt? It was some of the most fun in a physical activity that I’ve had in a while.
